Convective storms in closed cyclones in Jupiter's South Temperate Belt: (I) observations

چکیده

On May 31, 2020 a short-lived convective storm appeared in one of the small cyclones Jupiter's South Temperate Belt (STB) at planetographic latitude 30.8°S. The outbreak was captured by amateur astronomer Clyde Foster methane-band images, became widely known as Clyde's Spot, and imaged very high resolution Junocam instrument on board Juno mission 2.5 days later. images showed white two-lobed cyclonic system with clouds observed 890 nm. evolved over few to become dark feature that turbulence for months, presented oscillations its drift rate, slowly expanded, first into Folded Filamentary Region (FFR), later turbulent segment STB timescale year. August 7, 2021, new strikingly similar Spot erupted cyclone STB. exhibited transformation feature, transformed fully formed January 2022. Statistical Characteristics of Convective Storms in Darwin, Northern Australia

This M. Sc. thesis studies the statistical characteristics of convective storms in a monsoon regime in Darwin, northern Australia. It has been conducted with the use of radar. Enhanced knowledge of tropical convection is essential in studies of the global climate, and this study aims to bring light on some special characteristics of storms in a tropical environment. The observed behaviour of co...

Altimeter microwave surface observations in tropical cyclones

Surface measurements in tropical cyclones (TCs) are difficult to obtain and only microwave sensors below 15 Ghz can penetrate the deep convective clouds surrounding the areas where surface winds are the largest (Quilfen et al., 2007). These kind of measurements are crucial to complement the Dvorak TC intensity analysis as obtained from infrared/visible measurements (Velden and Coauthors, 2006)....

NCAR Use of Radar Observations to Improve Numerical Prediction of Convective Storms

Accurate prediction of the location and timing of convective storms has been a long-standing challenge due, to a large extent, to uncertainties in model initialization and parameterization. Since its advent, Doppler radar has been used successfully for severe weather detection and warning. However, until recent years, radar data have not been incorporated into atmospheric models for numerical p...

Error modeling of simulated reflectivity observations for ensemble Kalman filter assimilation of convective storms

[1] The impact of two different ways of modeling errors in simulated radar reflectivity data for observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) with an ensemble Kalman filter is investigated. An error model different from the one used in earlier studies is introduced, and it specifies relative Gaussian-distributed errors in the linear domain of the equivalent radar reflectivity factor. This mo...
